I want to find a cheap method to make picture frames. I have been looking at miter saws to cut the 45 degree angle. I was wondering if anybody had any input on that or if they know of a good miter saw that they have used personally. Also, using the wood from Lowes prevents me from being able to put the glass to the front of the frame. Is there special wood that you can buy that has a different back specifically for frames? Any input on building frames will help. Thanks.
mitre saw chipping my wood?
I am an artist and I make my own frames for my canvases. I use maple – making a shadow box style – the wood has an inner ridge or lip (if that makes sense). My mitre saw is chipping a corner off the wood- the part of the moulding that faces the back of the saw. I cannot for the life of me figure out why it is doing this. My husband seems to think it is the nature of the wood – that it is being "ripped" off in a sense – at the end of the cut. Can I tape the wood to help prevent this? We have a really good fine blade on it – fairly new (only used for making my frames – although it has not always been a problem.
Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I am very impressed with the response time here!
I just read in another question that the higher the teeth count the better – for fine cuts (for something like making picture frames)? Excuse my relative ignorance on this subject – I am an artist not a trades person….But should I be looking for a blade with a negative rake? And the diablo blades where might I find them?
Thanks again
Help with miter cuts please?
Hey everyone. I am learning to do some woodwork and have a problem with my miter cuts. I know if my board is 1.5 inches wide, then measure 1.5 inches in from my board and draw a line to make my 90 degree cut. I am making some picture frames and on my miter cut going this way \ it takes off 1.5 inches. Well on my miter cut / it is always 1/8 inch off. So when I put my frame together, the top is an inch wider than the bottom, making it hard for the glass to fit in. Any suggestion? Also, if I am facing the miter saw and turn it to the right side 45 degree, should my board come in right to left or left to right?

What can I make using just a miter saw?
What kind of projects can I do using a miter saw. I’m just beginning woodworking and want to make something, but the only saw I have is a miter saw. I’m good at making cuts with it, but I’d like some easy projects. All I can think of so far is picture frames. Anyone else have any ideas?
